Better Man: He’s Loving Angels and Potentially Bananas

Michael Gracey, the director behind the smash hit The Greatest Showman, is back with his latest musical extravaganza – Better Man. Known for his flair for bold, cinematic spectacles, Gracey’s latest venture has taken a surprising turn by casting love-to-hate pop icon (and occasional boyband member) Robbie Williams in a way you’ve never seen before: as a CGI chimpanzee.

When Better Man was first announced back in February 2021, Gracey teased the portrayal of Williams, saying, "As for how we represent Robbie in the film, that bit is top secret. I want to do this in a really original way. I just want the audience to think, ‘I’ve never seen this before.’" Well, get ready to have your world rocked (DJ) by a cheeky chimp from Stoke-on-Trent!

Why the Chimp? The Creative Choice Behind the Monkey

At first glance, the decision to depict the former Take That member as a CGI monkey may seem outlandish. However, there’s deep meaning behind this bold creative choice. Williams has long spoken about the pressure he felt as a member of the boyband, likening his stage presence to that of a performing monkey being dragged on stage. These candid interviews between Williams and Gracey, recorded before the project even began, offered personal insights into his mental health struggles and feelings of being controlled during his boyband days. This raw, open dialogue formed the foundation for the film's narrative, blending Gracey’s signature musical style with an honest look at Williams’ journey.

A Musical Biopic With Heart and Humour

Better Man isn’t just another biopic – it’s a full-blown musical spectacle, simmering with all the sweeping grandeur and lavish design that you’d expect from the director of The Greatest Showman. While the sight of Williams as a CGI primate may seem absurd, it’s this bold approach that captures the essence of the singer's self-view. Rather than saying somethin’ stupid, Williams has been very open in recent years about his mental health and personal struggles, and through this imaginative portrayal, the film taps into these underlying themes all while maintaining a lighthearted and feel-good tone.

Jonno Davies brings Williams to life as the CGI chimp, while the incredible cinematography by Erik Wilson elevates the storytelling. Together with Gracey’s impeccable direction, Better Man presents a story that is equal parts absurd and insightful, offering a unique perspective on the pop star’s complex journey.

A Film That’s More Than Meets the Eye

Whether you’re a lifelong Robbie Williams or just a cinema aficionado, Better Man has something for everyone. With its mix of emotional depth, spectacular performances, and a touch of absurdity, it’s a cinematic journey you won’t forget. And, of course, if you (or your mum) were a die-hard Take That fan, this biopic is sure to hit all the right notes.

Despite what you may think of the brazen baboon, with personal storytelling from Williams himself, Erik Wilson’s incredible cinematography and Michael Gracey’s spectacular direction Better Man swings into cinemas on December 26th – don’t miss your chance to see it on the big screen at The Light!
